- 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 : Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) is a cool-season vegetable that is grown for its edible, dense, and compact head called the curd. Planting cauliflower from seeds is a popular method to grow this nutritious vegetable. Cauliflower is a cool-season crop, so it’s important to plant the seeds at the right time. Start cauliflower indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date in your area. Transplant the seedlings outdoors when the soil temperature reaches around (10°C).
- 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 : Cauliflower prefers well-draining, fertile soil. Prepare the soil by loosening it with a garden fork or tiller. Incorporate organic matter such as compost or aged manure to improve fertility and drainage. Fill seed trays or small pots with a seed-starting mix. Moisten the mix before planting the seeds to ensure good moisture retention. Plant the cauliflower seeds about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in the soil. Space the seeds 2 inches apart in the tray or pot.
- 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 : Place the seed trays in a warm location, around 21°C. Cover the tray with plastic wrap to create a greenhouse-like environment that retains moisture. Cauliflower seeds typically germinate within 7 to 10 days. When the seedlings have grown 2 to 3 true leaves, they are ready to be transplanted outdoors. Harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Transplant the seedlings into the prepared garden bed.
- 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 : Provide consistent moisture to the cauliflower plants by watering regularly, especially during dry periods. Mulching around the plants helps retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer or organic amendments according to package instructions.
- 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 : Cauliflower heads develop when the plant receives cool temperatures (15-21°C) and consistent moisture. Some cauliflower varieties may require blanching, which involves tying the outer leaves together over the curd to protect it from sunlight and prevent yellowing. Harvest cauliflower heads when they reach their mature size but before they start to loosen or separate. Cut the head off the plant with a sharp knife, leaving a few leaves attached.
